about

When I first started writing for this record (Everything Around Me), the idea was to create a map of a depression cycle. Nothing as bold as a universal statement, or even a concept record, but more of a moment-to-moment acknowledgment of the mundane and the terrifying (which covers most of the spectrum, in my eyes). With this song, I felt it was important to validate that thoughts aren’t actions, that emotions weren’t the ultimate truth, more a reaction to something internal/external that isn’t being investigated.

It is a mostly true story that covers some heavy subjects (the title, and suicidal ideation, etc), but comes across like modern, Greek tragedy/comedy. I tried to take a very simple, acoustic song with familiar chords and melodies, and douse it in a swarm of sounds that always seem to be teetering just on the edge of completely falling apart. I didn’t want to build sounds here, in a traditional crescendo, but just wanted to throw the listener in headfirst.

Todd Philips’ Joker arrived well after I had written this (nearly a year later), but captures this song pretty well. I’m grateful thus far that my ending has been on the other end of that spectrum.
